Student house De Kerk, Rotterdam

The former church on Goudse Rijweg in Rotterdam was damaged by fire in the 1970s and subsequently radically converted into a student housing complex. As part of this conversion, two wings were built perpendicular to the nave. MATH has developed a vision for the complex that allows the building to be upgraded in phases and better showcases the original architectural quality of the church. This vision is being developed and implemented in phases.

Renovation of the entrance area began in April 2018 and has since been completed. Behind the brass-clad entrance door, the former church porch is once again fully illuminated. The structural elements from the 1970s are clad in sustainable bamboo, as is the new partition featuring the mailboxes. Both elements evoke the original wooden furnishings found in a church and contrast with the white and gray tones of the original church. Fresh accent colors and a sophisticated lighting design complete the design: an almost mystical atmosphere is created in the entrance hall.
